Support for Larger Configurations VS Operating
System v7.53 allowed for configuration of up to 999 logical devices and could provide support for approximately 999
concurrent active tasks. Many customer configurations however, were limited to a smaller number of concurrently
active tasks because other system resource limits would impose lower limits.
The most important of these constraints has been related to a pool of address space that the OS and user tasks use to hold
control blocks for active tasks, active and configured devices and open files. This space is called Global Shared
memory and is often referred to as GETMEM.
In prior releases of the Operating System, GETMEM was often a constraining factor in creation of systems supporting
large user populations.
OS 7.54 includes several related projects that together provide for more address space available for GETMEM and thus
for more users.
- OS support routines for managing the Global Memory pool have been substantially enhanced and now do a better job of
reorganizing GETMEM on the fly in order to recover and reuse address space as files are closed and users log off.
- The portion of GETMEM used to hold file control blocks for XDMS files has been moved from its former location to a
newly available address segment located above the 16MB boundary. This frees a large amount of space for other types
of control blocks and allows a substantial increase in active user population.
Recommendations Getronics makes the following
recommendations related to OS 7.54:
- Customers whose system usage on OS 7.53.01 is GETMEM constrained should upgrade to 7.54.10.
- Sites that do not use XDMS as their file system should upgrade to XDMS prior to upgrading to OS 7.54. The GETMEM
enhancements discussed above are not generally available to DMS files since their control block locations have not
changed. (Note that XDMS is a superset of DMS. When XDMS is installed the control blocks for all files of either
type are in the new GETMEM space. XDMS has other significant performance and recovery advantages. (We
recommend XDMS for all VS systems, even systems that do not need OS 7.54 features because of the other significant
advantages of XDMS.)
Availability OS 7.54 releases will be available
only for VS systems that are properly licensed for VS OS 7.53. OS 7.53 was the only Y2K compliant release.
Customers with software support contracts may be entitled to an OS 7.54.10 upgrade. Per incident upgrades will
also be available for purchase.
Continued Support for OS 7.53 Many VS sites do
not have a need for the enhancements in the various OS 7.54 releases. In order to best serve these customers,
Getronics expects to support both OS 7.53 and OS 7.54 baselines for an extended period of time.
