This notice is intended for system and networking administrators who will install and maintain the Release 1.85.00 VS TCP/IP TELNET software. It gives an overview of the product, discusses its hardware and software requirements, explains enhancements since the previous release, discusses special considerations for its use, and lists the product's media contents. Finally, there is a chapter about software operation. The following publications are referenced within this CSRN or are suggested as prerequisite reading. - VS TCP/IP TELNET User's Guide, Release 1.6 (715-0912B) - VS VT220 Customer Software Release Notice (715-1822) - VS VT220 Emulation Users Guide (715-1875) - VS TCP/IP Stack, Release 1.8 Customer Software Release Notice - VS TCP/IP 1.8 Enhancements (715-5292) - VS TCP/IP Configuration Guide, Releaase 1.8 (715-0900C) Other product names mentioned in this CSRN may be trademarks or registered trademarks of their respective companies. v CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION The VS TCP/IP TELNET application program is part of the VS TCP/IP Stack and Services, Release 1.8 product. VS TCP/IP TELNET is year 2000 compliant. The VS TCP/IP TELNET application is comprised of two major components: - TELNET Protocol/Controller - TELNET Interface The TELNET Protocol/Controller is included with the VS TCP/IP Stack, Release 1.8 product. It is the TELNET core software for your TCP/IP environment and provides a standard method of interfacing terminal devices and terminal-oriented processes to each other. The TELNET Protocol/Controller is responsible for interpreting and passing data from the TELNET Screen Driver to the TCP/IP protocols. The VS TELNET Interface, Release 1.8 enables you to log onto remote TCP/IP hosts from your terminal, providing an interactive interface to the core TELNET software (the VS TELNET Protocol/Controller). The TELNET Interface offers a complete set of menus that allows you to access the various TELNET command and negotiation options that are available to you. HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE PREREQUISITES This version of the TELNET Interface requires that VS TCP/IP Stack, Release 1.85 or later be installed first on the host system. For hardware and software requirements, refer to the VS TCP/IP Stack, Release 1.85.00 CSRN. 1-1 CHAPTER 2 ENHANCEMENTS AND SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS This chapter lists enhancements made to Release 1.85.00 of the VS TCP/IP TELNET Interface and discusses special considerations and restrictions that apply to its configuration, operation, and administration. ENHANCEMENTS The following setion lists the enhancements made to Release 1.85.00 of VS TCP/IP TELNET software. VS TCP/IP TELNET 1.85.00 has been compiled and linked using year 2000 compliant compilers and linkers. The following setion lists the enhancements made to Release 1.80.00 of VS TCP/IP TELNET software. 1. International character support via the file INTRTEL. See VS TCP/IP 1.8 Enhancements for more details on how to implement this feature. 2. Two additional fields were added to the TELNET screen to allow users to specify the amount of time to wait for the session to timeout, and to allow TELNET to connect to an outbound port other than the default TELNET value of 23. 3. VTMODE defaulted is NO since the field was misleading in what information it wanted as input (YES or NO). 2-1 CONSIDERATIONS AND RESTRICTIONS This section describes considerations and restrictions for the configuration and operation of systems running the VS TELNET, Release 1.8 software. The considerations are notes of special interest. The restrictions are descriptions of either hardware or software limitations. 1. VS TCP/IP Stack, Release 1.8 and its hardware and software prerequisites must be installed prior to the installation of the VS TELNET Interface. Restrictions involved in running TCP/IP as stated in the VS TCP/IP Stack, Release 1.8 CSRN are applicable. For example, TCP/IP recovery as described in that CSRN must be performed before running the Release 1.8 TELNET Interface. 2. Version 1.85.00 of TCP/IP is required for proper operation of this release of the TELNET Interface. 3. The following TELNET options and commands are available to TELNET users: Abort Output Are You There Break Erase Line Erase Character Interrupt Process Remote Echo Suppress Go Ahead Status. 4. Version 05.05.06 or later of the @MC23V972W serial IOC microcode is required for operation of the VT100 microcode. Older versions may hang the workstation requiring an IPL to regain use of the terminal. 5. Technically there is no limit to the number of VS outbound TELNET sessions that can be supported by VS TCP/IP. However expect a maximum of 32 - 50 concurrent sessions depending on system size and load. 2-2 CHAPTER 3 PROBLEMS CORRECTED The following problems have been fixed in Release 1.85.00 of the TELNET Interface: None The following problems have been fixed in Release 1.80.00 of the TELNET Interface: M410011708 When escape sequence is sent to VS (" ESC ( 0 ") the special graphic characters may not appear correctly on the 2256C workstation. The 2256C will not display most of the special graphics correctly, however a few could be translated to similar characters (@TEL100 version 7.50.30). INTERNAL A new version of Connection Layer Interface (CLIF 3.00.31) has been linked in. M800022934 Corrected software conditions causing TELNET to crash with PC04. 3-1 CHAPTER 4 MEDIA CONTENTS This chapter provides a list of the files contained in Release 1.85.00 of the VS TELNET Interface. The software is available on the following media types: Designation Media Type (-7) 9-track tape (-G) Streamer cartridge (-Q) 4mm dat Table 4-1 lists the media contents. The release tape contains the library @TELINST, which contains all of the software files. In the table, Protection Class represents the value of the file on the tape. Changes to the protection classes of these files may affect the operational characteristics of the TELNET interface. To verify the version numbers, run DISPLAY and specify the appropriate file, library, and volume. The version number and date will be visible in the first or second records displayed. 4-1 Table 4-1. Follow these steps to install the software: NOTE: You must have VS security administrator rights on the system you are installing to. TCP/IP and TELNET should not be running. 1. VS TCP/IP Stack, Release 1.85.00 or higher must already be installed on the target system 2. Log on to your system as a VS Security Administrator. 3. Mount the release tape and set the following values based on whether you received the VS TCP/IP 1.85 Upgrade or the VS TCP/IP services package (check the tape label): Set Volume = UPGRD or SRVCE Label = NL (for TAPE) or SL (for DISK) Mode = EX 4. Run BACKUP with Function = RESTORE for the library @TELINST on the release tape to library @TELINST on the TCP/IP (output) volume. If you are upgrading, you may wish to backup the existing @TELINST library. The output volume must be mounted on the system from which the BACKUP function is run. 5. When the procedure completes, dismount the input volume. 5-1 6. Run INSTALL in @TELINST on the TCP/IP (output) volume. The following screen appears: **************************************************************** VS TCP/IP TELNET Components Installation Version 01.85.00 (c) Copyright, Wang Laboratories, Inc., 1998 TELNET installation will proceed on volume VOLNAM when ENTER is pressed or press PF16 to exit without installing TELNET **************************************************************** where, VOLNAM is the TCP/IP (output) volume name where the media files were restored. 7. If the TCP/IP (output) volume does not have enough space, cancel out of the installation process and reorganize the output volume before retrying the installation. 5-2
